Progressive Revelation

First let me explain what I am NOT talking about in terms of "progressive revelation." I am NOT talking about extra biblical revelations in terms of other books, dreams, or visions. Other books, dreams, and visions must be confirmed and in line with the scriptures themselves in order to test the source in which the message is coming from. Many false doctrines and beliefs are born from this false idea of progressive revelation. The Bible is a completed book. We are not to add to it or subtract from it. It is sufficient to make us wise unto salvation. The canon of scripture is complete and gives us everything we need in order to know God and his will for us.

I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this scroll: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to that person the plagues described in this scroll. And if anyone takes words away from this scroll of prophecy, God will take away from that person any share in the tree of life and in the Holy City, which are described in this scroll. Rev. 22:18-19

...and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Tim. 3:15-17

So what is progressive revelation in its proper perspective? Jesus said that he himself would build his church...

And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. Matt. 16:18

Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit. Eph. 2:19-22

So with the foundation in place and the chief cornerstone tying everything together, is the rest of the building completed? Or is Jesus continuing to build his church? In what ways is Jesus continuing to build his church? Were certain doctrines and truths lost in which God would restore these truths gradually in his own timing as the last days conclude?

I heard, but I did not understand. So I asked, “My lord, what will the outcome of all this be?” He replied, “Go your way, Daniel, because the words are rolled up and sealed until the time of the end. Dan. 12:8-9

Then he told me, “Do not seal up the words of the prophecy of this scroll, because the time is near. Rev. 22:10

The Bible reveals that certain things can be sealed from our understanding and then later revealed. That's not to say that these truths weren't already within the scriptures, but that these truths were not able to be understood until God opened the understanding of his people's minds through his Spirit. We can see in history how God's word was taken away from the masses of mankind. During the Dark Ages, the Catholic Church forbid anyone to possess the holy scriptures. God's word had to be interpreted and communicated to the people through the priests.

The days are coming,” declares the Sovereign Lord, “when I will send a famine through the land—not a famine of food or a thirst for water, but a famine of hearing the words of the Lord. Amos 8:11

Then came the reformation in which the reformers rebelled against the Catholic Church and implemented the idea of "sola scriptura," which means "by scripture alone." The reformers rejected the authority of the Catholic Church over scripture itself. They proclaimed that scripture alone was our authority and rejected the authority of the Catholic Church. It was around this time when the printing press was invented. The Bible was copied, translated, and distributed into languages and peoples all around the world. The Catholic Church no longer had the advantage of keeping the scriptures from the people.

But the reformers failed to completely separate themselves from all the false doctrines and traditions of the Catholic Church. It was at this time that Protestantism was born, because these people formed their own churches in protest of the Catholic Church's authority, and attempted as best that they knew how, to obey scripture alone. Now that everyone had access to God's word, not everyone interpreted it the same way. Satan and his workers were hard at work to deceive God's people into remaining in false doctrine, false religion, and false tradition. It was about this time that many different denominations exploded into existence.

But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased. Dan. 12:4

Although I don't believe this verse was referencing our day, knowledge is rapidly increasing in these last days. When we look at this process play out, God didn't reveal all his truths to the reformers. God didn't reveal all his truths to any specific denomination. But God did bring to light certain truths within different denominations among Christianity in his own time. One denomination and people brought one truth to light, while another denomination and people brought another truth to light. These people remained in darkness to other truths that had not been revealed yet. And in many cases, the truth may have been revealed, but their hearts were not open to receive it. We must examine ourselves continually and be sure that our hearts are open to God's revelations. Not truths that are new, but truths that have always been within the scriptures, except only now God is opening your eyes to see it for the first time.

We must understand that God's church is not a building, organization, or denomination. It is instead a people that are led by the spirit of God. This people and way of life crosses over denominational boundaries. Our loyalty as Christians should not be to a denomination. We must stop thinking in terms of denominations altogether. God does not think this way. God is not going to judge you according to the denomination in which you are apart of. We will be judged as individuals. Stop identifying yourself, and limiting yourself to the doctrines of your denomination. Because no denomination has got all the truths of God. Denominations are creations of man. God is building his church of individuals, not denominations, organizations, or buildings.

As you navigate this website, you may find yourself saying, "I've never heard of this before," or "I know that's not true." But keep this concept of progressive revelation in mind. Is your heart open to learning something new that God can reveal to you through his word and through his spirit for the first time. These last days knowledge is increasing at a rapid speed. If you are standing still in your knowledge and revelation of scripture, then you are missing the boat. It was only a couple decades ago in which the internet came into existence. This is on par with the significance of the printing press. Vast knowledge and research is only one google search away and is at the tips of our fingers. Is there bad information out there? Sure, but with the guidance of the spirit of God inside of you to give you discernment, there is nothing to fear. The Holy Spirit will help you navigate the world wide web and lead you in the direction that will show you what the Father wills for you to know. If you ever have a question about anything, type your question into a search engine and pray for God to lead you into the truth. Sure, all truth is within the confines of the scripture, but there are many spirit lead commentaries out there on the scriptures itself to help you better understand and have a different perspective on a variety of topics.

And they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations; and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in. Isaiah 58:12

This verse is written within the context of the Sabbath day. So let's take the issue of the Sabbath as an example. I grew up believing that the Sabbath was done away with. But God revealed to me in his word that it was not. The reformers continued the tradition of Sunday worship from Rome. I don't believe it was God's purpose to reveal it to the people of that time period yet. So while they were walking in disobedience to God on that issue, they were being used by God to further his purposes on other issues. God has a plan for mankind that is so much higher than our perspective allows us to fully understand at times. His plan is full of wisdom and knowledge, and of a Godly perspective. It will come together for the good of all who love him. Keep your heart open to God's continuing revelations and you will be shocked by what God may reveal to you in his written word that has been there all along.
