Paul Reveals The Antichrist

The apostle Paul reveals to us important information concerning who the Antichrist is. Yes it is understood that there are many antichrists, but there is one particular one known as the “man of sin” or “the son of peridition” that is known as THE Antichrist. This Antichrist plays a prominent role in Bible prophecy and is related to other names as well such as the little horn of Daniel, or the sea beast of Revelation 13. The apostle Paul writes to the church in Thessilonica in very prominent passage of scripture in 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12. Let’s break this text down verse by verse and understand what Paul is revealing to us.

Concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to him, we ask you, brothers and sisters, not to become easily unsettled or alarmed by the teaching allegedly from us—whether by a prophecy or by word of mouth or by letter—asserting that the day of the Lord has already come. 2 Thess. 2:1-2 (This is referencing his 2nd coming, not 70ad, as indicated in the previous chapter in verse 7-10. So this eliminates any ideas that Paul is a preterist. We will shortly see that he is no futurist either, but a Historicist.)

Don’t let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction. 2 Thess. 2:3 (The “rebellion” or the “falling away” occurred in the 4th century during the time of Constantine when Christianity merged with pagan Rome. The church compromised from the truth and this further formed the foundation to the emergence of the Papal church.)

He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God’s temple, proclaiming himself to be God. 2 Thess. 2:4 (The Pope claims to be God on earth and to be able to forgive sins. The temple is the temple Jesus spoke of which is the church. The Pope sits as representative of the Christian church proclaiming to be God.)

Don’t you remember that when I was with you I used to tell you these things? 2 Thess. 2:5 (Paul reminds them of when he previously taught them about these things. This indicates the early church understood about these things. So we should be able to find the truth regarding this somewhere from early church teachings.)

And now you know what is holding him back, so that he may be revealed at the proper time. 2 Thess. 2:6 (Again the early church knew who the restrainer was. We ought to be able to find the truth somewhere in early church teaching on this.)

For the secret power of lawlessness is already at work; but the one who now holds it back will continue to do so till he is taken out of the way. 2 Thess. 2:7 (The restrainer had to be taken out of the way so the Antichrist could rise to power. The restrainer was believed by the early church, who knew who it was, to be the Roman Empire/Emperors. When it fell, the Antichrist would rise to power. In the 5th century the Roman Empire fell and it paved the way for the Papacy to rise to power.)

And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will overthrow with the breath of his mouth and destroy by the splendor of his coming. 2 Thess. 2:8 (The Papacy rose to power in the 6th century. It will be destroyed at Christ’s 2nd coming.)

The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with how Satan works. He will use all sorts of displays of power through signs and wonders that serve the lie, and all the ways that wickedness deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness. 2 Thess. 2:9-12 (The Papacy lead the Roman beast and the false church by deception.)
